BALTIMORE, March 1 (UPI) -- A Baltimore father was arrested and charged for allegedly beating his 5-year-old daughter to death because she soiled herself, police said.

Matthew Carr, 22, was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in the death of his daughter, Mya Carr, The Baltimore Sun reported.

Police received a call Monday night from Carr, who said he found his daughter unresponsive in a bathtub. When paramedics arrived at his home, they found the child's body on the bathroom floor.

Signs of trauma were found on the 5-year-old's arms, legs and to other areas of her body, records show.

Homicide detectives said the bathroom appeared to have been recently cleaned and smelled of bleach and that children's clothes also appeared to have been washed in the sink.

"Evidence strongly indicated Mr. Carr attempted to clean the crime scene," detective Aaron Cruz wrote in court papers.

Carr, who detectives said appeared to have been drinking, later told detectives he beat his daughter with his hands because he was mad that she had an accident, Cruz wrote.

Carr was ordered held without bond by a Baltimore City District Court commissioner. A preliminary court date has been set for March 27.
