CLEVELAND, Feb. 29 (UPI) -- Police across Ohio reported a surge in false alarms and even arrests following this week's deadly shootings at a high school near Cleveland.
Tips from students and alleged threats posted on social media led to an uptick in contacts between students and police in four counties, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer said Wednesday.
Most of the incidents reported in the wake of the Chardon High School shootings turned out to be hoaxes or simple mistakes based on an over abundance of caution, the report said.
One case led to an arrest Tuesday. The Summit County Sheriff's Office said in a written statement that a 14-year-old boy was picked up for allegedly threatening on Facebook to shoot another student. Deputies said the Glenville High student had been arrested previously for bringing a gun to school.
Three students were killed and two were wounded at Chardon High Monday. The alleged gunman, 17-year-old T.J. Lang, made a brief appearance in juvenile court Tuesday and remained in custody.
