CHARDON, Ohio, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- T.J. Lane, suspected of shooting and killing three students at Chardon High School in Ohio, was quiet and didn't talk about family problems, classmates said.

Teresa Hunt told CNN Lane, a 17-year-old sophomore, was friendly with her niece.

"He was a really nice kid to her," Hunt said. "He wouldn't start up a conversation, but if she talked to him he would hold the conversation with her."

"He seemed like a very normal, just teenage boy," Lane's friend, Haley Kovacik, said. "He did have a sad look in his eyes a lot of the time, but he talked normally. He never said anything strange," she said, adding Monday's shootings left her in "complete shock."

Lane lived with his grandparents and was reluctant to discuss his family life, CNN said.

His father, Thomas Lane Jr., has a history of arrests for violent crimes against women, including Lane's mother.

Lane was to appear Tuesday in juvenile court, though Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said Lane likely will be tried as an adult.
