WASHINGTON, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Former Sen. Bob Kerrey, D-Neb., who moved to New York after retiring from Congress in 2001, wants to come home and run for Senate again, a senior Democrat says.

The Washington Post reported Monday the unnamed Democrat told Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., Kerrey wanted to enter the fray despite saying earlier this month he was going to beg out because of family obligations.

Kerrey is a Democratic known quantity for voters in a state where the selection is known to be sparse behind the retiring Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson.

If Kerrey wants to avoid charges of carpetbagger -- which he may not be able to do -- he has to file for the Senate seat in Nebraska this week, the Post said.

Kerrey, 68, served in the Senate from 1989 to 2001 and previous was governor of Nebraska.
