1 dead, 19 hurt in Tenn. bar shooting

JACKSON, Tenn., Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Gunfire erupted in a Jackson, Tenn., nightclub, leaving one person dead and 19 injured, police said.

The shooting broke out about 2 a.m. Sunday at the Karma Lounge where a party was being held following a Saturday afternoon basketball game between Lane College and LeMoyne-Owen College, The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal reported.

"It was the most chaotic scene, I'll say that," Jackson police Lt. Tyreece Miller said. "I think we're very fortunate. Based on the number of people, it's amazing that we didn't have more than that killed."

It wasn't known what sparked the attack and no arrests had been made.

"We just know that there was some type of argument between a group of people that precipitated the shots being fired," Miller said.

The dead man was identified by police as Lecarlos Todd, 19, of Memphis. The newspaper said 11 of the 19 who were injured were from the Memphis area. Some were hit by gunfire and others were injured in a stampede that followed.

At least three victims remained hospitalized.
