Husky that killed Pa. baby not euthanized

CHURCHILL, Pa., Feb. 23 (UPI) -- A dog that fatally attacked a 2-day-old baby in Pennsylvania will not be euthanized, officials said.

The dog, an 18-month-old husky renamed Helo, was adopted Tuesday by William Yuhring, who saw the news coverage of the Feb. 16 death of newborn Howard Nicholson Jr., the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

"It's not the dog's fault," Yuhring, who lives in Churchill, Pa., said Wednesday. "That dog was put in a very uncomfortable situation and I didn't want to see it victimized further."

The dog's previous owner, Brandy Furlong, 21, told police she put her infant in a baby carrier, which she placed on the living room floor before leaving the room for a few minutes. She said she heard the baby screaming and ran to find the child bleeding severely from the head with the husky nearby.

The baby died 90 minutes later from severe head trauma, the Medical Examiner's Office said.

The husky and another dog were removed from the home.

Alan Hernandez, a neighbor of Yuhring's, said he is concerned about the dog living in his neighborhood.

"I have a little boy and now I'm going to have to make him come inside if that husky is outside," Hernandez said. "This is shocking to me. I can't believe someone adopted that dog. That dog should have been euthanized."
