Colbert: Super-PACs riding 'wallet tails'

NEW YORK, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- U.S. comedian and mock news anchor Stephen Colbert said political operatives are riding his "wallet tails" in the wake of the creation of his Colbert super-PAC.

Colbert said Tuesday on his Comedy Central program "The Colbert Report" his super Political Action Committee -- Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow -- has "owned" the political money sphere since he formed it in June.

"When other people cover the super-PAC story that offends me, because I have owned this story since last June when I formed Colbert super-PAC with one simple yet noble goal -- to raise massive amounts of money, and I did it," Colbert said, referencing a story in The Hill.

The Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United decision ruled super-PACs are permitted to raise unlimited funds as long as they don't coordinate with candidates or their campaigns and don't contribute directly to them.

More than 300 super-PACs have registered with the Federal Election Commission since the 2010 ruling, The Hill said.
