Statement: Mont. kidnap suspect confessed

BISMARCK, N.D., Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Court documents say police believe Montana teacher Sherry Arnold was likely killed shortly after she was kidnapped while jogging.

An affidavit said the girlfriend of one of the two suspects in the slaying told the FBI that Michael Spell had told her that the pair had grabbed Arnold and strangled her in their vehicle.

The pair, who had been smoking crack cocaine around the time of the alleged kidnapping, then bought a shovel at a store in North Dakota and buried the body outside the town of Williston. The remains have yet to be discovered.

KFYR-TV, Bismarck, N.D., said that according to the affidavit, Spell confirmed the statement made by his girlfriend, Angel Cruz, during a later interview with the FBI.

Spell and co-defendant Lester Waters were to appear in a Montana court on Feb. 28.
