DETROIT, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- A poll suggests Michigan Republican voters favor Pennsylvania's Rick Santorum over native son Mitt Romney.

In a Detroit News poll, 34 percent of Republican voters chose Santorum while 30.4 stuck with Romney, however the difference falls in the margin of error of 4.4 percentage points.

The poll, commissioned by WDIV-TV, Detroit, took place between Feb. 11 and 13, and surveyed by phone 500 voters likely to vote in the GOP primary on Feb. 28.

While Romney won the state in the 2008 campaign, local GOP voters tell The Detroit News they have their doubts this time around. As Greg Rotter, a Santorum supporter from Indian River said: "Is [Romney] saying things to get elected?"

Santorum, a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, made campaign stops in Detroit and Novi on Thursday, while Romney met voters in Monroe and Farmington Hills.

Romney, former governor of Massachusetts, was born and raised in Michigan. His father was former Michigan Gov. George Romney.
