Mom allegedly drowns 1 child, 2nd critical

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles woman was in custody Wednesday after allegedly drowning her 1-year-old daughter and critically injuring her 5-year-old daughter, police said.

Police said the girls' father came home and found the mother apparently trying to kill the children in a makeshift tub in a standup shower of their South Los Angeles residence, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The newspaper said a neighbor told KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, the family had emigrated from Guatemala a decade ago.

The woman, whose name had not been released, was in custody with charges pending, police said.
