Villaraigosa named Dem convention chairman

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has been selected chairman of the 2012 Democratic National Convention, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.

The newspaper said the appointment to the high-profile campaign role would be officially announced Wednesday in Washington and Villaraigosa would join President Barack Obama for a presidential fundraiser Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

Villaraigosa will serve as spokesman for the convention that begins Sept. 3 in Charlotte, N.C.
