Occupy Nashville considers winter hiatus

NASHVILLE, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Occupy Nashville protesters say they may shut down their camp for the winter rather than wait to be evicted.

Tennessee lawmakers have been considering measures to kick the Occupy campers out of Legislative Plaza; however some members of the movement favor going home on their own and then reconvening in the spring.

"I think being out here during the winter months is risking people's health," D.J. Hudson, 23, told The (Nashville) Tennessean. "I think we should plan for the spring, keep ourselves rested and return later stronger than when we left."

The option was kicked around at a meeting of Occupy participants Saturday. Other ideas included staying put or moving to a site on private property.

The state is pressing forward with plans to make unauthorized camping on public property a Class A misdemeanor carrying a $2,500 fine and up to a year in jail. "I think the fines and jail time are pretty huge," protester Lindsey Krinks said.

Members of Occupy Oakland showed no signs of shrinking from the winter chill. A march Saturday night resulted in three arrests after demonstrators scuffled with police, Bay Area News Group said.

The Occupy Oakland Web site vowed the marches would continue "weekly on Saturday -- forever."
