Woman pleads guilty to kidnapping baby

NEW YORK, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- A woman pleaded guilty to kidnapping a 19-day-old baby girl from a New York City hospital in 1987.

Ann Pettway admitted in federal court Friday to kidnapping Carlina White, now 24, and raising her as her own, the New York Daily News reported.

"I took the train to Harlem," Pettway said. "I went to Harlem Hospital. I took a child. I got back on the train and raised her as my own."

She then took the infant to Bridgeport, Conn., and raised her as Nejdra "Netty" Nance.

"I know it was wrong," Pettway said.

As part of a plea agreement, Pettway faces 10 to 13 years in prison.

Carlina's biological mother, Joy White, and father, Carl Tyson, found the sentence term to be too short.

"My daughter has been missing for 23 years," White said. "I've lost 23 years of being without my daughter."

Twelve years in prison, she said, is "not enough."
