DENVER, D.C., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- A University of Colorado student, faced with possible expulsion, says his attempt to "glitter bomb" Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney was worth it.
Denver police cited Peter Lucas Smith, 20, with "throwing a missile" and "unlawful acts on school grounds" after Smith tried to throw glitter on Romney at an event on the university's Denver campus, KUSA-TV, Denver, reported Thursday.
Smith said he was inspired by previous reports of glitter-bombing -- used to support gay rights -- and his attempt was in solidarity with gay rights groups and people who disagree with Romney's agenda.
"I was thinking about how intuitive the idea of glitter is," Smith told KUSA Wednesday. "It's very visible to a camera. It is very hard to deal with at the moment, especially when cameras are rolling, and it causes no physical harm."
Smith said he was held by Secret Service agents and threatened with the possibility of being expelled from the university, where he is a political science major.
"For me personally, and for the people who share my political beliefs, I do believe it was worth it," Smith said. "However, I'm very concerned about my future, my political future, my career, my education, which I cherish more than anything else."
Smith also said he was sorry if his actions brought embarrassment to the university.
