Hospital data breach under investigation

BRIGHTON, Mass., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- St. Elizabeth's Medical Center says it is investigating how files containing patient information turned up on the ground outside its Brighton, Mass., campus.

An employee of Roadrunner Moving and Storage found the files Friday and reported them to his employer. Roadrunner contacted St. Elizabeth's, which had someone collect the documents, the Boston Herald reported.

Christopher Murphy, spokesman for Steward Health Care, which owns St. Elizabeth's, issued a statement:

"On Friday, Feb. 3, we received a report that certain information of St. Elizabeth's may have been mishandled by a trusted vendor. We are conducting an investigation to determine the … circumstances and any actions that may be required by Steward."

Murphy declined to discuss details of the incident beyond the statement.

It is not known whether St. Elizabeth's has reported a data breach to the Department of Public Health, as is required by state law.
