5 arrests made in Ariz. couple's deaths

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz., Feb. 8 (UPI) -- A 31-year-old Arizona man is accused of kidnapping, murder, arson and theft in the deaths of a retired doctor and his wife in suburban Phoenix, police said.

Four other people face charges related to the Jan. 30 killing of 79-year-old Dr. Lawrence Shapiro, founder of Health Services Advisory Group, and his wife Glenna, 78.

Their bodies were found bound and burned beyond recognition in their Paradise Valley home after firefighters spotted the couple's burning vehicle outside a shopping center. Police arriving later at the Shapiros' home saw smoke coming from it.

Paradise Valley police Chief John Bennett said stolen property and a suspected murder weapon have been recovered, The Arizona Republic reported Wednesday.

"This continues to be an active investigation. Efforts to locate persons of interest are ongoing," Bennett said. The police chief didn't reveal the weapon or confirm the cause of death, the newspaper said.

Michael Lee Crane is charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, burglary and arson. Police said he has a lengthy criminal record and served prison time for the possession of drug paraphernalia.

Shawn Nicloy, 29, of Phoenix is charged with trafficking in stolen property and hindering prosecution. Kelly Steward, 29, of Glendale is charged with theft and trafficking in stolen property. Brittnay Beinhauer, 27, of Tempe is charged with theft. Danielle Rossman, 26, Phoenix, is charged with possession of stolen property, trafficking in stolen property and hindering prosecution.
