UConn students protest rape 'comedy' video

STORRS, Conn., Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Protests by University of Connecticut students have led the student-run television station to remove a video from its Web site depicting a comedic take on rape.

The video shows a woman frantically running through campus as an apparent rapist chases her. When she attempts to use campus emergency phones, her entreaties for help are met with responses that women are "always crying about being raped" and suggesting she "suck it up."

Emily Pizzale, a UConn senior, organized a meeting Wednesday at the Women's Center at the Storrs campus to protest the video, The Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported Thursday.

"I was disgusted and appalled that someone would even make this video let alone actually get it onto TV. … The fact that student fees are funding garbage like this is outrageous," Pizzale wrote in an e-mail.

Mateo Gonzalez, a senior and UCTV general manager, said the video was not reviewed by an entertainment director or production manager because there wasn't time.

"We apologize for any frustration or harm this content has caused. We are working toward a more careful screening process, as well as a review of our broadcast policies, that will prevent this situation from occurring again," Gonzalez said.
