SANTA ANA, Calif., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- A deadly horse virus outbreak has equestrians in California's Riverside and Orange counties concerned about their horses, officials said.

Veterinarians at Rancho Sierra Vista in San Juan Capistrano said they had diagnosed 16 cases and euthanized one horse.

The virus is EHV-1, which causes cold-like symptoms at first and can eventually progress to paralysis of the hind limbs, veterinarians said.

The virus has a 10-day incubation period. Some horses can carry the illness without becoming sick and the virus can be spread by contaminated equipment.

Sycamore Trails Stables canceled a horse show due to the illness.

"Nobody would want to come to a horse show with that disease that close by," manager David Provence told the Los Angeles Times.
