Hundreds of tacos delivered to Conn. mayor

EAST HAVEN, Conn., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- An immigration advocacy group delivered hundreds of tacos to a Connecticut mayor who made an allegedly racist remark about Hispanics.

East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo was not in when the tacos arrived Thursday afternoon, The Hartford Courant reported. They ended up at a homeless shelter, except for one left for Maturo.

Maturo became the center of a national firestorm this week when he responded to a question about what he was doing for his town's Hispanic community by saying he might have tacos for dinner. Four East Haven police officers have been charged with racial profiling.

About 12 people showed up at the town hall with the aluminum trays of tacos.

"Hopefully you know now that your comments have only heightened the racial tensions and help to explain how the kind of racial intolerance uncovered by the United States Department of Justice was allowed to take hold of the East Haven Police Department," said Latrina Kelly of Junta For Progressive Action, one of several people who delivered bilingual statements.

At a meeting Thursday night to discuss damage from Hurricane Irene, several residents said they were embarrassed by the mayor's remark. Maturo, who has issued an apology, did not comment on the tacos, WTNH-TV in New Haven said.
