Police: Ax killer ate victim's eyeball

BRIDGEPORT, Conn., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- A man allegedly used an ax to kill another man in Bridgeport, Conn., then ate part of the victim's brain and one of his eyeballs, police say.

Police and U.S. marshals arrested Tyree Lincoln Smith, 35, a former Bridgeport resident, in Lynn Haven, Fla., The Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported.

Smith has been charged with killing Angel Gonzalez, whose decomposed body was found Jan. 20 on the third floor of an abandoned building in Bridgeport, authorities said.

Smith's cousin Nicole Rabb told police Monday Smith arrived at her house Dec. 16 with blood on his pants, his hands and an ax he carried and said he wanted to take a bath, an arrest warrant said.

She said Smith told her he had gone to the abandoned building to sleep on a second-floor porch and that a Hispanic man woke him and invited him into the building on the third floor, saying he didn't have to sleep in the cold.

Smith told Rabb he began beating the man with an ax, the warrant said.

"Tyree told [Rabb] the blows to [Gonzalez's] head were so severe that he was able to remove an eye from the man's head along with pieces of brain matter and a piece of his skull," the warrant said.

Rabb helped detectives reach Smith on his cellphone and he said he was living in Lynn Haven.

Police determined Smith had caught a Greyhound bus to Florida last Friday and arrived Monday in Lynn Haven. Bridgeport police obtained a warrant for Smith's arrest Tuesday and he was taken into custody Tuesday night in Lynn Haven.
