LOS ANGELES, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- More than $70,000 was donated to Los Angeles classroom projects within two days as part of a gift card redemption program by an educational foundation.
The Wasserman Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting education in Southern California, has donated $4 million to the Los Angeles Unified School District through a program allowing parents and residents to choose specific projects the money benefits, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.
Gift cards worth $10 to www.donorschoosela.org were handed out Monday to customers at Los Angeles area Starbucks. By Wednesday, the customers redeemed 7,189 gift cards worth $71,890 on the Web site, where they were able to choose which classroom projects get funding.
The foundation said 87,000 students are in classes that have benefited from the funding from the gift cards handed out Monday.
All told, the foundation said more than 54,000 gift cards have been redeemed since the program began, fully funding about 4,800 classroom projects and partially funding nearly 3,300 others.
