PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Police in Portland, Ore., shot an armed man dead Wednesday during a standoff in a parking garage.

The man, whose name was not reported, called 911 Wednesday morning, telling police he had committed robbery and planned to jump from the roof of the parking garage, The (Portland) Oregonian reported.

Before the Crisis Negotiation Team could arrive, two police officers fired shots at the man on top of an elevator shaft in the garage, police Sgt. Pete Simpson said. Officers found the man dead after using fire ladders to reach the top of the elevator shaft.

Standard protocol dictates the two officers who fired their guns would be placed on administrative leave while homicide detectives investigate the incident, the newspaper said.

No officers were injured in the shooting.
