Man earns reward in homeless killings case

SANTA ANA, Calif., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- A California man who pursued an alleged serial killer and helped catch him will receive a $5,000 reward, a police group said Wednesday.

The reward was offered by the Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs for information leading to the arrest of a suspect in the killings of four homeless men, the Los Angeles Times reported. The deputies group and the Anaheim Police Officers Association said they would give another $5,000 to Mercy House, a provider of services for the homeless.

Itzcoatl "Izzie" Ocampo, 23, a former U.S. Marine who lived in Yorba Linda, was arrested after he allegedly killed John Berry, 64, behind a Carl's Junior restaurant in Anaheim. Prosecutors say Ocampo targeted Berry and stalked him for three days after he was featured in a story on the homeless.

Donny Hopkins, 32, of Yorba Linda told police he saw the stabbing. He chased Ocampo with another man.

Ocampo could face the death penalty if convicted of killing Berry, James McGillivray, 53, Lloyd "Jim" Middaugh, 42, and Paulus Cornelius "Dutch" Smith, 57.
