Turbulence injures six

MIAMI, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Six crew members were injured on an American Airlines flight from Brazil to Miami that was hit with harsh turbulence, an official said.

Flight 980 hit a rough patch on Sunday en route from Recife Airport in Brazil to Miami International Airport, the Miami Herald reports.

"It was a lot of people screaming, there was a lot of people crying," said passenger Gillas Correa. "There was a woman who was sitting a couple rows behind us; she got thrown up in the air and landed in the hallway."

An airport spokeswoman says six crew members were injured, five of whom were hospitalized. One was treated at the airport. Correa said they were fortunate enough to have an emergency room doctor on board who was able to help treat the injured prior to landing.
