TUCSON, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Rep. Gabrielle Giffords met Monday in Tucson with some of the people who were at the constituents meet-and-greet last year when she was shot, her office said.

The Arizona Democrat was sponsoring a "Congress on Your Corner" event outside of a grocery store Jan. 8, 2011, when the shooting rampage ensued, leaving six people dead and 13 people, including Giffords, injured.

Pictures of Giffords talking with survivors -- including her former intern, Daniel Hernandez, who is credited with saving her life -- were posted on her Twitter page.

The 41-year-old, three-term congresswoman announced Sunday she was leaving the House so she could concentrate on her recovery from her head wound.

Meanwhile, a report on prison doctors' efforts to rehabilitate accused gunman Jared Loughner's fitness for trial is expected to be filed with a federal court Wednesday.

U.S. District Judge Larry Burns previously ruled Loughner wasn't competent to stand trial but that doctors at prison hospital in Missouri likely could rehabilitate him sufficiently so he could understand the charges against him and work with his attorneys.

Loughner faces 49 federal counts, 14 of which carry a possible death penalty.

Loughner was diagnosed with schizophrenia and has been forcibly treated with medication since July. His current four-month stay in the federal hospital prison expires next month.
