LOS ANGELES, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Jabba, who was the only hippopotamus at the Los Angeles Zoo, died Friday after being euthanized, officials said. He was 28 years old.

Jabba had been under veterinary care for the past month and was not responding to treatment. "On Friday, January 20, staff made the difficult decision to euthanize him," the zoo said in a statement.

Jabba, who arrived at the Los Angeles Zoo in 2009, lived for many years at the San Diego Zoo, where he sired several calves. His body will be transported to the California Animal Health & Food Safety laboratory for a complete necropsy.
