Plan to abolish Calif. tuition proposed

RIVERSIDE, Calif., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- University of California students fielded a radical no-tuition plan to system President Mark G. Yudof, who responded positively, officials say.

The plan, presented by a student group on Wednesday, would abolish yearly tuition and replace it with post-graduation payments of 5 percent of income for 20 years, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Chris LoCasio, a UC Riverside student, started the group Fix UC to find a solution to skyrocketing tuition and diminishing state support. The proposal for the plan, released last week, takes into account several different factors, including provisions for international students, graduates who go into public service and graduates who are out of work. The payments even account for dormitory costs as well as students who attend from out of state.

The Times reported current UC in-state tuition is at $12,192, which does not include room, board and fees.

Yudof told UC regents that he was "very impressed" with the proposal, and promised that it would be taken into serious consideration.

UC faces deep cuts in state funding over the 2012-2013 academic year if voters turn down proposed tax increases.
