Indiana GOP wants to fine missing Dems

INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Indiana House Republicans voted Thursday to fine Democrats for refusing to come to the floor while considering a so-called right to work bill.

Republicans proposed a $2,000 fine for each lawmaker who denies a quorum to do business, The Indianapolis Star reported. It takes 67 lawmakers for action on the floor to be official and only five Democrats have joined the 60 Republicans.

Democrats said they would work on any bill except the so-called right-to-work legislation, which would bar companies and unions from negotiating a contract that requires non-member workers to pay union fees.

The missing Democrats said they want more time to develop an amendment to the bill allowing voters to voice their opinions in a referendum.

The Democrats filed a request Wednesday for a temporary restraining order, arguing lawmakers should not be forced to choose between supporting their families and serving their constituents.
