Meth smoking mom allegedly kills two kids

FRESNO, Calif., Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Fresno, Calif., police say a woman who went on a violent spree before committing suicide was under the influence of meth.

Aide Mendez, 23, turned a gun on her two children, Aliyah Echeverria, 17 months old, and Isaiah Echeverria, 3; she also killed Paul Medina, 27, the cousin of her common law husband Eduardo Lopez, 33, The Fresno Bee reported

Officers responded to a 911 call from Mendez's neighbor around 7 a.m. on Sunday. The neighbor heard several shots and banging on his front door. When he looked though his peephole, he saw Mendez stabbing Lopez with a steak knife.

When officers arrived on the scene, Lopez was badly wounded but still able to speak. Lopez is in critical condition at the Community Regional Medical Center.

Police entered to find Medina dead in the kitchen. Mendez was dead in the bathroom, next to the tub, where Isaiah and Aliyah were shot dead as well.

Police recovered an iPad with a video taken a few hours earlier of Mendez and Medina smoking what appeared to be meth.

Deputy Chief Kieth Foster told The Fresno Bee a 7-year-old girl ran from the apartment shortly before police arrived on the scene. The girl was the daughter of a friend of Mendez, who was unharmed. She has been an instrumental witness in the case, Foster says.
