WASHINGTON, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- U.S. President Obama's re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee raised $68 million in the fourth quarter last year, Obama's campaign said.

Fourth-quarter fundraising brought the total for 2011 to $222 million, Politico reported.

Of the October-to-December collection, $42 million went to Obama's campaign, with $24 million going to the DNC.

Obama re-election campaign manager Jim Messina said in an e-mail to supporters the fourth-quarter numbers were "pretty good " while knocking stories claiming Obama and the DNC would raise a billion dollars as false.

"Too many of our supporters think, 'They don't need our money,' or they don't have to give now," Messina said. "Look, I get why people would think that, but they are completely wrong. … We have to build a ground organization now, not in six months. … The only way this thing works is if each of you takes a piece of this campaign."

Republican front-runner Mitt Romney took in more than $24 million in the fourth quarter, Politico said. The tally doesn't include money raised by his mega-political action committee.
