SACRAMENTO, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Deputies used stun guns on a man trying to retrieve an item he left behind on a flight in Sacramento after he wouldn't let his bag be screened, authorities say.

Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Ramos told The Sacramento Bee the traveler was taken to a hospital for a "precautionary evaluation" following the 1:30 p.m. Tuesday incident.

The Los Angeles Times said the man was identified as Edwin Barton, 26.

Ramos said the man had gotten off a plane and walked outside the Sacramento airport's secure area into the baggage claim area before trying to return to get something he said he had forgotten on the plane. After a Transportation Security Administration agent told him he would have to get a pass at the ticketing counter, he returned with the pass, but allegedly refused to submit his bag for screening, Ramos said.

He then allegedly argued with TSA officials, prompting nearby deputies to get involved, Ramos said. The man tried to run away, and the deputies used stun guns on him, the Times said.

Ramos said he did not know what was in the bag or the nature of the item the man had left on the plane.
