Re-evaluation ordered for Giffords shooter

TUCSON, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- A federal judge has ordered a new evaluation for the man who shot U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords at a Tuscon, Ariz., political event last January.

U.S. District Judge Larry A. Burns ruled psychologist Christina Pietz must turn in a new evaluation of Jared Lee Loughner's competency to stand trial by Jan. 25, the Arizona Daily Star reported Tuesday.

Loughner is charged with 49 crimes for the mass shooting that left six people dead and 13 others wounded, including Giffords, D-Ariz., on Jan. 8, 2011.

Pietz and a psychiatrist previously diagnosed Loughner with schizophrenia and he has been treated with forced medication for the illness since July.

Loughner's current four-month stay in a federal hospital prison expires early next month.
