SACRAMENTO, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- California education officials say school districts can make their own decisions on adding the contributions of gays and lesbians to the curriculum.
A law that requires expanding social science materials took effect Jan. 1. But many local officials say they do not have the resources to revise study materials, The Sacramento Bee reported.
Christopher Hoffman, superintendent of the El Dorado Union High School District, said the district plans to wait for new textbooks or for direction from the state department of education.
"Right now we don't have any funding to do the curriculum we need," he told the Bee. "We aren't going to add anything."
California is scheduled to adopt new history and social sciences textbooks in 2015. State officials say they do not plan to monitor compliance with the law before then.
Under the law, the contributions of gays, lesbians, transgendered people and people with disabilities are to be added.
