CHICAGO, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- A Chicago woman was killed Sunday when she got stuck in an elevator during a fire at her high-rise apartment building, firefighters said.

Nine other people were injured in the pre-dawn fire at the North Lake Shore Drive building, a fire department spokesman said.

Chief Joe Roccasalva told the Chicago Tribune the fire broke out in a 12th-story apartment. Smoke and heat poured out of an open door into the hallway.

The woman was found in an elevator on 12 and lived on that floor. It was not clear if she had been trying to escape or had been on her way up when she was overcome.

Two firefighters were among those injured in the two-alarm fire, although none was seriously hurt. A total of six civilians went to the hospital with smoke inhalation.
