WINDSOR, Conn., Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Police say an 82-year-old Connecticut man was taken into custody for allegedly killing a black bear that wandered onto his property in Windsor.

John G. Rocha was charged Wednesday with negligent hunting and illegally killing a black bear, The Hartford Courant reported.

Police said they responded to reported sightings of a bear and cub and found a 5- to 6-year-old bear dead on Rocha's property.

Investigators from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said the bear had caused damage to Rocha's bird feeder and had been shot with a .30-caliber rifle.

A female cub found nearby was tranquilized by DEEP officers and transported to a wildlife area, the Courant said.

Police said Rocha was released on a promise to appear in court Jan. 17.
