NEW YORK, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- A couple of newlywed New York City police officers got stuck working New Year's Eve in Time Square, but at least they were together.

NYPD officers Robert and Vanessa Garland spent their first New Year's Eve together as newlyweds patrolling Times Square, the New York Daily News reported.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the ball drop here tonight next to my wife," Robert Garland, 25, said Saturday afternoon.

The couple began working Saturday at 1 p.m. and were scheduled to stay in Times Square "until everyone leaves," early Sunday, said Vanessa Garland.

The two officers usually work out of different precincts, but both were assigned, with thousands of fellow officers, to work security for the annual New Year's Eve celebration.

"It's just luck that we were together," said Robert Garland. "It's great that we were able to be together."

Robert and Vanessa Garland dated for more than three years before they were married Sept. 25.
