LAKELAND, Fla., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A Lakeland, Fla., police officer shot in the head as he patted down suspects in a local park has died, authorities said.
Officer Arnulfo Crispin was shot Sunday night as he searched five men in a park in the 2200 block of Crystal Grove Lane.
He died early Wednesday, the Lakeland Ledger reported.
After a massive manhunt, Kyle Williams, 19, was arrested Monday morning and charged with attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement official, Bay News 9 reported.
Police said witnesses alleged Williams shot Crispin while the officer was conducting the patdown search after responding to a call on Crystal Grove Drive.
Crispin had radioed communications from the park that he was getting out of his police car after spotting some suspicious subjects, police said.
A few minutes later another Lakeland officer arriving as backup discovered Crispin had been shot.
