CARSON, Calif., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A man who ran for councilman as a Libertarian in a California city called for the assassination of President Obama on his Facebook page, officials said.

George Ogilvie, a spokesman for the Secret Service, said the agency plans "appropriate follow-up" on Jules Manson of Carson, a city in Los Angeles County, the Los Angeles Times reported. Manson reported on Facebook that he had been visited by the Secret Service.

Manson's comment that Obama and his "monkey children" should be killed had been removed from Facebook, officials said. But another Web site, Your Black Politics, posted a screenshot.

"Not including my regular friends whom I converse with often or have in the past and always welcome their comments and posts, I do not believe many of you are concerned citizens," Manson said in his own posted comment. "Most of you were simply looking for drama to demonstrate your politically correct righteousness."

He said his remarks were "careless" and "emotionally driven." They were apparently inspired by the passage of the National Defense Authorization Act, which allows some terrorism suspects to be detained indefinitely.
