Romney scoffs at Obama's business acumen

WASHINGTON, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney chided President Obama Sunday for supposedly being a duck out of water on the economy.

Romney said voters had no choice but to consider Obama a failure if for no other reason than his inability to bring down unemployment.

"His great failing is he does not understand how this economy works, and how his policies have made it harder for this economy to put Americans back to work," Romney said on "Fox News Sunday."

Romney said his platform was just the opposite and would encourage business growth by eliminating and modernizing regulations, and by turning more responsibilities over to the states.

"I do know how the economy works and my policies are designed to get people what they desperately want; they want to stop being poor, have a good job and have a bright future," Romney said.

Romney reiterated his quip that Obama's business experience was limited to "running" bailed-out Chrysler and General Motors. That experience included scores of layoffs and an overall downsizing.

However, Romney said, the pain for autoworkers is part of the overall facts of life in the business world.

"He wanted to save the enterprise, and he wants to make it profitable so it can survive," Romney said. "Profit in enterprise is essential to keep it alive and to keep (some) people employed."
