SACRAMENTO, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- California could face a lawsuit over budget cuts that eliminate all funding for school transportation, officials say.
The Los Angeles Unified School District is already planning litigation, the Los Angeles Times reported. Dennis Meyers of the California School Boards Association said the organization might join the LAUSD suit.
The state, facing huge budget deficits, has cut aid to public schools by $18 million over the last few years. Gov. Jerry Brown announced another $79.6 million reduction Tuesday.
Tom Torkakson, the state superintendent of public instruction, held a teleconference Wednesday with local school officials and representatives of teacher and parent groups.
"Enough is enough," he said. "This is on the back of four years of chaos and cutting ... the financial emergency we've been in is only getting worse."
The Times said some local school officials said they would continue to provide transportation without state aid. Federal law requires it for special needs students and for some low-income students.
