Perry: Romney 'out of touch' with Iowans

WASHINGTON, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry said Sunday fellow campaigner Mitt Romney is "a little out of touch with the normal Iowa citizen."

During Saturday's GOP debate in Des Moines, Iowa, the Texas governor criticized Romney for his support of an individual mandate in the first print of his book, "No Apologies." Romney suggested a $10,000 wager challenging Perry's assertion but Perry declined saying "I'm not in the betting business."

"I was taken a little aback. I'm driving out to the station this morning. I'm sure I didn't drive by a house that anyone in Iowa would even think about that a $10,000 bet was possible," Perry said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday." "So, a little out of touch with the normal Iowa citizen," he added.

During the debate, Romney accused Perry of also using an individual mandate by requiring sixth-grade girls to get the HPV vaccine in Texas.

"Well, clearly, we had an opt-out in that executive order and the Legislature said that they didn't like the way I had gone forward. I agreed with them. And it's not in the state of Texas," Perry said on the morning show. "So, there is a clear difference here. He still is supporting individual mandate and that is the fact."
