Random shooter fatally shot in LA

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Police said Friday they do not know why a man who was shot and killed by police was shooting, apparently randomly, at pedestrians and drivers in Hollywood.

The man, whose identity had not been released by Friday evening, fired a handgun at passing vehicles near Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street beginning around 10 a.m. PST, wounding at least one victim before police shot and killed him.

Detectives investigated Southern California addresses Friday afternoon, looking for more information about the gunman, the Los Angeles Times reported.

A motorist who was shot in the jaw was reported in critical condition at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, but was expected to survive, the newspaper said.

Witnesses to the shooting, near the ArcLight Cinemas, said at first they wondered whether the incident was real or part of a production.

"This is Hollywood, and they do film stuff all the time," said Greg Watkins. "I honestly thought they were filming something."

The gunman was shot by a detective and an off-duty LAPD officer who the Times said may have been working nearby -- on a movie set.
