Some Rust Belt cities gaining jobs

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- An upswing in U.S. manufacturing has brought jobs to hard-pressed cities in Michigan and Ohio, Bureau of Labor Statistics figures show.

George Zeller, an economic analyst in Ohio, told the Los Angeles Times increased car sales are helping the Rust Belt.

"Youngstown in particular, and Ohio in general, are doing substantially better than we were," said George Zeller, an independent economic research analyst in Ohio. "Auto sales had been picking up, which is where the recovery is coming from."

Unemployment fell at least 2.5 percent in three Michigan regions between October 2010 and October 2011, the Times reported.

Unemployment was 9 percent in Muskegon-Norton Shores in October 2011, down 2.6 percent from a year earlier and the biggest drop in the country. Flint and Jackson both saw the jobless rate fall 2.5 percent.

In Ohio, unemployment in Youngstown and Steubenville was 10.2 percent in October 2010. A year later it was 8.8 percent in Youngstown and 8.9 percent in Steubenville.
