N.J. mayor resigns in wake of sex scandal

MEDFORD, N.J., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- The mayor of Medford, N.J., accused of having sex with a male prostitute, has formally submitted his resignation, town officials said.

Republican Chris Myers did not address the sex scandal in his letter of resignation, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

In October, a Web site posted a photo of a man in his underwear who appeared to be Myers and accused him of hiring an escort, the newspaper said.

A male prostitute said Myers paid him $500 for a rendezvous at a hotel, the report said.

The prostitute reportedly went public about the incident after Myers failed to fulfill promises for a car and gifts, the Daily News reported.

The married father of two said in his resignation letter that his "work commitments" prevent him from devoting "the time that is needed in the months ahead" to fulfill the job of mayor.

A spokesperson for Lockheed Martin Corp. said Myers has been suspended indefinitely from his job as a vice president for the technology manufacturer.
