GOP head 'indifferent' to Cain dropout

WASHINGTON, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- The Republican National Committee chairman said Sunday he's "indifferent" to Herman Cain's decision to suspend his campaign for the GOP presidential nomination.

Appearing on CBS' "Face the Nation," Reince Priebus was asked if Cain's problems had become a distraction that overshadowed the other candidates.

"Well, I don't know if they took attention away from the other candidates," he said. "I mean he had to make a decision for himself, which is, look, my -- the polling isn't going in the right direction and I can't raise any money."

When asked if he was glad Cain was dropping out, Priebus said, "I'm indifferent. I really don't care whether he stayed in or he got out. It doesn't bother me at all."

Obama campaign adviser Robert Gibbs, also appearing on the program, said the Democratic president's campaign would still concentrate on Mitt Romney despite the shakeup in the GOP field, focusing on former Massachusetts governor's alleged flip-flopping on issues.

"I think the reason that … people don't like him and why he hasn't caught fire is if you hear what he says today, it's likely to change tomorrow," Gibbs said.

"I think there's great skepticism. He's a political gymnast of the highest order. He will say virtually anything to get elected to any office."

Gibbs inferred former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich would likely get the runoff from Can's departure from the GOP field.

"I have got tell you, I think a lot of people in -- inside the Beltway and outside the Beltway -- woke up today to a very different political environment and one in which Newt Gingrich is very much for real," Gibbs said.
