Mom shot dead while stabbing daughter

ATLANTA, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Atlanta police shot and killed a woman who refused to stop stabbing her 4-year-old daughter, a police spokesman said.

Maj. Keith Meadows told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Carulus Hines, 40, and her daughter Nalecia both died, but it was not immediately known if the child died of stab wounds or was accidentally shot.

Police were called to the Carver Hills neighborhood in northwest Atlanta Monday by a neighbor after Hines' 8-year-old son and her adult brother sought help.

The boy told the neighbor his mother choked him and threw him out of a window.

He is reported in stable condition with what are believed to be minor injuries.

When officers went to the home, they found Hines seated in a chair and stabbing 4-year-old Nalecia.

When she ignored an order to drop her weapon, Meadows said between 10 and 16 shots were fired.

A neighbor told police Nalecia suffered from Down syndrome.
