Lawyer: Freed man could still be guilty

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Lawyers for two South Florida police agencies say a man who spent 26 years in prison for rape and murder before he was cleared by DNA could be guilty.

Anthony Caravella, 43, has sued the city of Miramar and the Broward County Sheriff's Office in federal court this month, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Tuesday. His lawyer, Barbara Heyer, said he has been a victim of official misconduct that began when he was a mentally challenged 15-year-old and has continued since his release from prison in 2009.

The victim, Ada Cox Jankowski, 58, was raped, stabbed and strangled.

Another man's DNA was found in the rape kit used in the investigation of the assault. But Jamie Cole, a lawyer for Miramar, said Caravella could also have assaulted Jankowski.

Cole said Caravella confessed to his mother and admitted the crime under police questioning.
