CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- A former Iowa elementary school principal has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for secretly videotaping students in a boys' bathroom.
More than 20 parents, some of whom testified, attended Robert Burke's sentencing Monday, The (Cedar Rapids) Gazette reported.
Chief U.S. District Judge Linda Reade imposed the maximum sentence on the 43-year-old Burke. She also ordered that he spend 20 years on supervised release if he completes the sentence.
Burke pleaded guilty in August to installing hidden video cameras in a boys' bathroom at Sageville Elementary School in Dubuque. He also had one on his belt so he could record when he visited the bathroom.
An investigator testified Burke used the videotape to create child pornography. He said on one occasion Burke offered a tape to someone he encountered online, but there was no evidence he actually distributed pornography.
One mother with two children at the school said Burke "took advantage of his power and position."
"My children are silent victims but I refuse to be," he said.
Burke apologized for his actions.
