WASHINGTON, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- More than 13 million U.S. households received food stamps or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits in 2010, government figure show.
The state with the highest food stamp/SNAP participation was Oregon with 17.9 percent while Tennessee and Michigan were among other states with the highest participation, a release from the U.S. Census Bureau reported Thursday.
California, New Jersey and Wyoming were among the states with the lowest participation rates, the release said.
Sixteen states had increases in food stamp/SNAP participation larger than the national average increase of 16.2 percent.
The only state to experience a significant decrease in the receipt of food stamps/SNAP between 2009 and 2010 was Louisiana, the Census Bureau said.
