Five dead in storms across South

ROCK HILL, S.C., Nov. 17 (UPI) -- At least five people were killed and dozens were injured Wednesday when severe storms spawned tornadoes from Mississippi to North Carolina, authorities said.

An apparent twister was blamed for killing three people in a rural community about 5 miles from Rock Hill, S.C., The (Charleston) Post and Courier reported.

Five people were injured and several homes were damaged or destroyed about 6 p.m., York County sheriff's Lt. Mike Baker told the newspaper.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported a man died Wednesday afternoon when a pine tree fell on a sport utility vehicle in Georgia's Forsyth County.

The death toll rose to to five overnight after a tornado touched down in Davidson County, N.C., killing one person. At least eight to 10 people suffered injuries,The Winston-Salem (N.C.) Journal reported

The National Weather Service said 23 tornadoes were sighted across the South on Wednesday, although Accuweather.com said some sightings were likely of the same funnel cloud.

WDAM-TV, Hattiesburg, Miss., reported EF 2 tornadoes moved through the region early Wednesday, injuring 15 people, with Jones County apparently the hardest-hit.

Nearly three dozen buildings were damaged.
